Sonata on ‘tsunami violin’ dedicated to victims
RIKUZENTAKATA, Iwate (Jiji Press) — A sonata played on a violin made of wood swept away by the March 2011 tsunami was dedicated to the disaster victims on Thursday in front of a pine tree on the northeastern Pacific coast that miraculously survived the massive waves.
In Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, the Bach sonata played by Takashi Kudo, a 26-year-old violinist from Morioka, consoled people affected by the disaster six years ago.

“I hope the gentle but powerful tone [of the violin] will buoy people up, if only a little,” Kudo said after his performance.
“The tender sound touched a chord with me,” said teary-eyed Shimoko Kato, 69, from the Iwate city of Kamaishi. “I felt a surge of emotions about a member of my family who perished in the tsunami.”
