３月３日、京王プラザホテルには手作りのひな人形が飾られました。
All dolled up
Colorful handcrafted tsurushi kazari (hanging decorations) surrounding hina dolls are put on display Thursday at Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, for Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival), which is celebrated every year on March 3. The custom of using such ornaments as decorations to pray for the health and well-being of young girls is said to have started in the Edo period (1603-1867). The ornaments will be on display until March 27.

今回取り上げる表現は、見出しにある“doll up”です。“doll”は名詞で「人形」という意味がありますが、今回の記事では動詞として用いられています。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「〈女性が〉«…で/…のために»(美しく)着飾る[っている]、おめかしする[している]«in/for»」とありました。
LDOCEでは、“if a woman dolls herself up, she puts on attractive clothes and make-up, especially before going out to a party, club etc”と定義されています。
今回の記事では女性が着飾っているわけではありませんが、ひな祭りが女児の幸福・成長を祈る行事なので、用いられているのではないかと思います。(Blue Sky)
