Virtual reality system re-creates Nishikori serves to help athletes
NTT Corp. has developed virtual reality technology that allows people to experience what it is like to receive serves from professional tennis player Kei Nishikori.
Players strap vibration equipment to their bodies and don a pair of special goggles, then stand before a screen that projects re-creations of Nishikori’s serves using computer graphics. When a virtual shot is returned in time, they can feel the impact through the racket and vibration equipment.
NTT said it would use the technology to help develop young athletes for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
With the cooperation of Nishikori, NTT used three cameras to record footage of the tennis star serving three types of shots at the end of last year. With the CG technology, the company also reproduced the trajectory, speed and spin of the balls he hit, as well as his form. People can feel as if they are actually receiving his serves on court.

LDOCEでの定義を見てみると、 “the curved path of an object that has been fired or thrown through the air” や “the events that happen during a period of time, which often lead to a particular aim or result” と説明されています。
