Human trafficking victims at most ever

A total of 25 Japanese were victimized by human trafficking in Japan in 2016, the highest since statistics started in 2001, National Police Agency data showed Thursday.

The total was up 12 from the previous year.

Of the Japanese victims, 84 percent were forced into prostitution and 13 people were aged between 10 and 19, according to the agency.

One-third of the Japanese victims got to know the human trafficking suspects through the use of social networking services.

Besides the Japanese, eight Thais, seven Cambodians, five Filipinos and one Vietnamese were victimized by human trafficking in Japan last year.

　“human trafficking” を取り上げます。trafficと聞いてまず思い浮かぶのが、交通や交通量かと思いますが、humanが前にくるとそれらとは異なった意味を表します。『ライトハウス英和辞典』でtrafficを調べると、3つ目の意味に「（不正な）取り引き」とありました。“human trafficking”は人を不正に取り引きすること、つまり「人身売買」のことをさします。同辞書にあるその他の例としては “drug（arms）trafficking”で「 麻薬（武器）の密売（買）」が載っておりました。

　LDOCEには “the secret buying and selling of illegal goods” と定義されています。また、traffickingで引いてみると “the buying and selling of illegal goods, especially drugs” や “the activity of taking people to another country and forcing them to work” という意味も見つかり、人を国外へ連れ去り、強制労働させる意味合いを含むことがわかりました。（aqua）
