　今回取り上げる表現は、"let-up"です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「«不快な状況・激しさなどの»休止、停止、休まるところ«in»；弱化」とありました。通例“no”や“without”などの否定語を伴う単語だそうです。
　LDOCEでは、"when something unpleasant stops or becomes less difficult, severe etc"と定義されています。
　"let-up"は元々"let up"という句動詞で、「〈痛みなどが〉和らぐ、弱まる；〈雨・嵐などが〉小降りになる、弱まる」といった意味があります。(Blue Sky)
