　“scuttle”ˈ/skʌtəl/を取りあげます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「船を沈める」「計画などを台無しにする，…を破棄する」という意味があり、今回は後者の意味で使われています。語源は古ノルド語でskautという言葉から派生したものだそうです。LDOCEでは“to ruin or end someone’s plans or chance of being successful – used especially in news reports”とあり、イギリス英語ではscupperと記されていました。こちらの語源はドイツ語のようです。(lua)
