Who’s that on the horizon?
A sunset said to look like a daruma doll is seen on Sukumo Bay in Kochi Prefecture on Thursday. Called a “daruma sunset” after the good-luck doll, this natural phenomenon appears when light from the setting sun is refracted in vapor generated by a temperature difference between the atmosphere and the seawater, creating a mirage of a second sun. The phenomenon can be occasionally seen on cold, clear days from various spots during November through mid-February.

(lua)
