今回取り上げる単語は、chapです。

Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 イギリス英語で“a man or a boy”とのことでした。 “a friendly form of address between men and boys”とも書かれておりました。

元々はchapman（「行商人」）からきている単語だそうです。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「[親しみを込めて]やつ，[呼びかけ]やあ，よう」と載っておりました。

ちなみに「あかぎれになる」という全く意味の異なる動詞もchapです。こちらの意味は以前のブログで取り上げられておりました。（Gomez）
