Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has eased his ardor for the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade arrangement, acknowledging that he might be forced into unwanted bilateral trade talks with the U.S. administration of President Donald Trump.

Arrangements are continuing for a summit between Abe and Trump in Washington on Feb. 10, and trade and security issues are certain to be on the agenda.

But in both fields, Japanese government officials are unsure of what exactly they will be dealing with concerning the new U.S. administration.
