800-doll Hina Matsuri diorama visits Tokyo

This year’s hina doll exhibition at the wooden Hyakudan Kaidan hall in Tokyo opened to the public on Friday, with its major features including a big diorama comprising more than 800 dolls from Fukuoka Prefecture.

The eighth Hyakudan Hina Matsuri exhibition at the Tokyo metropolitan government-designated cultural asset in the Meguro Gajoen wedding complex brings together over 1,000 hina dolls from all of the seven prefectures in the Kyushu region, including Fukuoka and Kumamoto, which was hit by a series of powerful earthquakes last April.

“I want my visitors to be truly delighted,” said doll expert Mamiko Senoshita from Iizuka, who contributed to the enormous collection. “Hina dolls don’t usually make people gasp, but this one takes spectators’ breath away anywhere they go,” she said.
