Large crane topples at Takahama N-plant

A 113-meter crane toppled over two buildings at Kansai Electric Power Co.’s Takahama plant in Fukui Prefecture on Friday night, the operator said Saturday.

In the accident, which occurred at around 9:50 p.m. Friday, the 270-ton boom crane partially damaged steel frames of an auxiliary building and an adjoining spent fuel storage facility for the No. 2 reactor, but no one was injured, Kansai Electric said. The central control room for the reactor is located in the auxiliary building.

今回取り上げるのはboomです。日本語でも「〜ブーム」と言ったりしますが、今回はそのブームとは異なる意味で用いられています。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）でboomの項目を見てみると、「（航海）ブーム、帆げた、（土木）ブーム（クレーンなどの腕木の部分）」という意味が見つかりました。LDOCEには “a long pole used as part of a piece of equipment that loads and unloads things” と説明されております。

語源をOnline Etymology Dictionaryで調べると “from Scottish boun, borrowed from Dutch boom "tree, pole, beam," from a Middle Dutch word analogous to Old English beam”とあり、オランダ語で木や棒を表すboomからきていることがわかりました。（aqua）
