Freeze continues in Tokyo; snow warnings issued for wide areas

The mercury hit minus 2 degrees in central Tokyo early on Jan. 16, the third straight day of below-freezing temperatures in the capital, as a cold air mass continues to cover the Japanese archipelago.

Although the air mass has weakened, the Japan Meteorological Agency is issuing heavy snow warnings mainly along mountainous parts of northern and eastern Japan through the night of Jan. 16.

今回は “the mercury” を取り上げます。mercuryには水銀という意味がありますが、今回のようにtheが前につくとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）でmercuryの項目を調べると、2つ目に「（the〜）（古風、略式）気温」という意味が見つかりました。 Cambridge Free English Dictionary and Thesaurusには “the temperature” とあり、 “With the mercury climbing to 40 degrees, beaches and pools will be crowded this afternoon.” という例が載っておりました。

今回は“The mercury hit minus 2 degrees” で−2℃の気温を記録したことを表現しています。
