Nara Dreamland opened in 1961 and was a hit, but struggled to maintain visitor number after the opening of Tokyo Disneyland in 1983.
The opening nearby of Universal Studios Japan and Tokyo DisneySea in 2001 were further nails in the coffin for ageing park, which began to see attractions fall into disrepair and park stores shut up shop.
Nara Dreamland officially shut down in 2006 and was left to rot.

『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版，大修館)で調べたところ、「…を破滅（失敗，死）に導くもの」と載っておりました。
