Meet Yontama, the feline star who may yet outshine Tama

Yontama, an 8-month-old female calico cat, has all the markings of a great stationmaster.

Some, railroad fans as well as cat lovers, say she might even be the cat's whiskers, such was her performance on her first day of on-the-job training here Jan. 5 to greet travelers when they arrive.

Yontama, the latest mascot of the Kishigawa Line operated by Wakayama Electric Railway Co., will act as a stand-in stationmaster when Nitama, the successor to the great stationmaster Tama, takes days off.

今回取り上げる表現はstand-inです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、可算名詞で「代理、替え玉、（映画、テレビ俳優の）代役、吹き替え」という意味が見つかりました。LDOCEには “someone who does the job or takes the place of someone else for a short time” や “someone who takes the place of an actor for some scenes in a film” と定義されております。

記事ではよんたまについて “will act as a stand-in stationmaster” と述べられており、ニタマが休みの日にはよんたまが駅長代理として活躍するようです。
