Swimmers take icy plunge at snow festival in China

Ignoring sub-zero temperatures and biting Siberian winds, 400 swimmers plunged into an icy river in China’s northern city of Harbin on Thursday, the first day of the city’s annual ice and snow festival.

Winter swimming, as it is known in China, is enjoyed mainly by middle-aged and elderly people who believe it benefits their health.

Thursday’s event saw swimmers from across China and abroad compete in an icy pool cut into the frozen Songhua river.

今回取り上げるのは “sub-zero temperatures” です。subには「下」や「〜以下」といった意味を表すことから“sub-zero temperatures” で氷点下という意味になるのではないかと思いました。
『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）でsub-zeroを調べてみると、形容詞で「（普通は限定）（温度が）零度以下の」とありました。LDOCEには “below zero in temperature” と定義されております。

今回記事では “Ignoring sub-zero temperatures and biting Siberian winds” となっており、気温氷点下の中、身を切るようなシベリアの風にもひるまず寒中水泳をする人々の様子が伺えます。
