Municipalities take up fight for bookstores / People still value pleasure of picking out books by hand

The number of neighborhood bookstores is dwindling nationwide, but some towns are taking action.

The municipal government of Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, took the unusual step of opening a city-run bookstore on Dec. 4. A bookshop that opened in Rumoi, Hokkaido, thanks to the lobbying of local citizens, recently marked its fifth anniversary. Despite the rise of online booksellers, it appears people still value the pleasure of picking out a book by hand.

今回取り上げるのは、以前英検プリントにも出てきたdwindleです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、「だんだん小さくなる、次第に減少する、衰える」とありました。LDOCEには “(also dwindle away) to gradually become less and less or smaller and smaller” と定義されております。
語源を調べると、goo辞書にはdwine＋leとあり、衰える、衰弱するという意味をもつdwineと反復の意の動詞を作るleとが組み合わさってできていることがわかりました。
今回は、近所の書店がだんだん減っていく様子をdwindleを用いて表現しています。（aqua）
