Ameyoko market area packed with shoppers but sales down

With shoppers in a frenzy preparing for New Year's, the popular Ameya-Yokocho shopping area, known as Ameyoko, in Tokyo’s Ueno district was hopping on Dec. 30.

It was so crowded that it was difficult even to walk about in the area, which consists of about 400 outlets.

Amid a flurry of animated sales pitches from store clerks, one clerk at a store selling seafood, including tuna and crabs, said, “Those who have money, please come here. Those who don’t have money, please leave.” The remark drew laughter from customers.

LDOCEでは、“a state of great anxiety or excitement, in which you cannot control your behavior”と定義されています。

LDOCEには“The women were screaming and in a frenzy to get home.” (Blue Sky)
