今回取り上げる表現は、platformです。真っ先に思い浮かんだ意味は、「（駅の）プラットホーム」でした。過去のブログ記事を検索してみたところ、platformには沢山の意味があるようです。（下記リンク参照）この記事でのplatformの使われ方は取り上げられた意味とは別のようです。
『ジーニアス英和大辞典』（大修館）で調べたところ、沢山意味がある中で「高台，大地，岩だな」が載っておりました。注釈として「plateauよりは規模が小さい」と書かれておりました。plateauも「高原，大地」を指すようです。
語源に着目するとplatformはフランス語のplate-formeが原義で、platが平らな、formが形を表します。plateauもフランス語が語源で、平らなものを表すplatelがからきています。
どのくらいの大きさの土地をplatformと呼ぶのか気になったためインターネットで調べたところ、 “an extensive sedimentary layer covering some parts of this area, called a platform.”との記載がありました。（Gomez）
