今回取り上げるのはYuleです。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館)では古い言い方で「クリスマス」とありました。
また「クリスマス季節」のことを“Yuletide”ともいうそうです。
Oxford Living Dictionaryでは“archaic term for Christmas”と定義されており、語源は“originally applied to a heathen festival lasting twelve days, later to Christmas.”とあるように、古代ヨーロッパのゲルマン民族やバイキングの間で冬至の頃に行われたお祭りがもとだそうです。(Wikipediaより)
