bucket list

日本には観光名所がたくさんあります。

Why You Should Consider Japan for Your Next Ski Trip

Japan is home to roughly 600 ski and snowboard resort and some of the world's heaviest snowfalls, making it an increasingly popular spot for winter enthusiasts.
“Shots of athletes in Japan skiing and riding in chest-deep powder have been appearing on the pages of ski magazines and in ski films for several years, making it a brand new bucket-list destination within the core, freeride community,” Dan Sherman, vice president of marketing of Ski.com, told Travel + Leisure.
Japan's atypical ski experiences are helping the country get on more travelers' lists, but there's still time to plan a trip to beat the rush.

今回取り上げる単語は、bucket list(bucket-list)です。

手持ちの電子辞書に内蔵されている『リーダーズ英和辞典/リーダーズ・プラス』(研究社)によると、「生きている間にやっておきたいことの一覧(リスト)」とのことでした。説明として「イディオムkick the bucketおよび映画 The Bucket List(最高の人生の見つけ方)に由来」と書かれておりました。

映画は見たことがあったのですが、由来の説明としてはよく分からなかったため、インターネットで調べなおしたところ以下のようなものを見つけました。

All of this has moved far from the idiom of “kicking the bucket.” That expression, etymologists conjecture, originated with a now-forgotten meaning of “bucket”: a beam, probably from the Old French word “buquet,” meaning “balance.” The idiom referred to hanging up animals for slaughter, who would then, in their death throes, kick that beam.
Back in 1999, the screenwriter Justin Zackham was thinking about that phrase when he began composing a checklist that he called, “Justin’s list of things to do before he kicks the bucket.” After finishing the list, he told me via email, he thought of a more succinct title for it: “Justin’s bucket list.”

kick the bucketは「死ぬ、くたばる」という意味です。Zackham氏の考えた ““Justin’s list of things to do before he kicks the bucket.”が元ネタということになります。

ちなみに同サイトでは、 “summer bucket list: things to do before autumn comes.”のように、最近では「死ぬ前にやりたいことリスト」以外の使われ方もされていると紹介されておりました。(Gomez)
