Emperor’s video message strikes a chord with Princess Masako
Crown Princess Masako said she “took to heart” the video message in which Emperor Akihito mentioned the difficulties he may face in carrying out his duties due to his age and health.
Masako was speaking via a written statement issued through the Imperial Household Agency to mark her 53rd birthday on Dec. 9 and share her thoughts on various matters.
She said that she had watched the August broadcast of the emperor's video message on TV along with her daughter, Princess Aiko, 15.

今回取り上げる表現は、“strike a chord”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、“strike [touch] a chord”で「〈意見・考えなどが〉«人々に»共感[同情]を呼び起こす«with»」とありました。
LDOCEでは、“to do or say something that people feel is familiar or true”と定義されています。
『ウィズダム英和辞典』の“chord”の項目を見てみると、第１義には「弦」という意味がありますが、第３義には「心；(心の)琴線」とありました。日本語に「心の琴線に触れる」という言葉がありますが、まさに“strike [touch] a chord”の訳としてはこれがあてはまるのではないかと思います。(Blue Sky)
