すでにご存じの方も多いと思われますが、俳優の成宮さんが昨日芸能界からの引退を発表しました。

Hiroki Narimiya, a popular Japanese actor recently alleged by a magazine to have used illegal narcotics, will retire from show business, his agent said Friday.
The agent said, however, that it could not confirm any such use by the 34-year-old actor through a drug test, and that retirement was his wish.

今回取り上げる表現は１段落目の"narcotic"という単語です。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第５版）で調べてみると、「麻薬、催眠剤」と記されていました。また同時にWord Reference com も見てみると少し長くなりますが”an addictive or nearly addictive substance that blunts the senses causing sleep or relief from pain, also capable of causing confusion, inability to think or feel, and possibly coma and death.”と定義されていることもわかりました。
余談になりますが、接頭辞が"narco"であると主に麻薬関係の言葉を表します。"narcotize"や"narcotism"が主にその例です。
