In the US, where the practice is banned on minors in several states, the American Psychiatric Association has said it opposes any treatment “based on the assumption that homosexuality per se is a mental disorder or … that a patient should change his/her sexual homosexual orientation”.

今回取り上げる表現は，“per se”です。見た目からラテン語由来の表現であることが分かります。これは，すでに何度か取り上げられていて，意味は，「それ自体は」や「本質的に」です。以前のブログによると，「明らかに」という意味もあるようです。英語で言うと，“by [in] yourself”に相当する表現になります。
さらにMerriam-Websterを引いてみると “We generally use per se to distinguish between something in its narrow sense and some larger thing that it represents.”と記載されていました。狭義と広義を区別するために使われるようですね。用例として，次のような文が載っていました。“Thus, you may have no objection to educational testing per se, but rather to the way testing is done.”(Nao)
