今回取り上げる表現は、“laudable”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「〈目標・努力などが〉称賛に値する、立派な(admirable)」とありました。
LDOCEでは、“deserving praise, even if not completely successful”と定義されていました。
“laud”は「«…だと/…のことで» …を称賛する«as/for»」という動詞です。そこに動詞にくっつき形容詞に変化させる“-able”をともなって今回の表現はできています。(Blue Sky)
