今回取り上げるのはfirsthandです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、形容詞で「（限定）直接得た、（情報など）じかの、」副詞では「直接に、じかに」とありました。secondhandとなると、「また聞きの」となります。Merriam-Websterには “obtained by, coming from, or being direct personal observation or experience” と定義されており、directやpersonalという部分がポイントとなるかと思われます。
記事では “the last opportunity to see the structures firsthand” となっており、「その建物を直接見る最後の機会」と訳すことができるかと思います。
