すでに取り上げられている記事ですが、鳥インフルエンザウイルスが検出された新潟県上越市の養鶏場では約23万羽、同じくウイルスが検出された青森県と合わせると合計56万羽ものニワトリが殺処分されました。
Niigata culls 540,000 chickens to combat bird flu at two infected farms
NIIGATA – The Niigata Prefectural Government completed the culling of 540,000 chickens at two poultry farms Sunday to contain an outbreak of the highly virulent H5 strain of bird flu.
About 230,000 chickens were killed at a farm in Joetsu, following the completion of a similar procedure to eradicate 310,000 chickens in the village of Sekikawa last week.
The outbreak has triggered restrictions on the transport of chickens and eggs within a 10-km radius of each poultry farm. Four farms in Sekikawa and two in Joetsu have resumed shipment of eggs and other products after passing inspection tests in accordance with national rules on epidemic prevention.
取り上げる単語は"cull"です。
文脈的に「殺処分」という意味が想像できると思います。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版(大修館)で確認してみると、「(弱った動物)を(一群の中から)取り出して殺す」とあり、名詞でも「(弱った動物)を取り出して殺すこと、淘汰」や「(弱って殺された)動物、くず」などの意味で使われます。
他にも「(花)を摘む、…を(一群の中から)より抜く、集める」という意味があります。
The Concise Oxford Dictionary 第6版を見てみると、"kill (surplus animal)"とありました。
「群の拡大を防ぐ」というニュアンスがあることが分かりますが、今回の場合はただの群ではなく、感染したニワトリの群の拡大を防ぐということで、"cull"が使われています。(Akim)
