Calif. fire kills 9 at dance party; dozens missing

A fire that roared through a warehouse dance party in Oakland, Calif., killed more than nine people and left at least two dozen others missing and feared dead inside the gutted building, officials said Saturday, as anguished friends and relatives awaited word of their fate.

The cause of the blaze and precise number of casualties remained undetermined hours after flames engulfed the two-story, structure that occupied about half a city block and housed a cluttered warren of artists’ studios, craft booths, antiques and furniture.

The blaze started at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday in the city’s Fruitvale district, a mostly Latino, blue-collar area that is also home to many artists living and working in converted lofts.

今回取り上げる表現はguttedです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）でgutの項目を調べてみますと、「1（動物、魚）のはらわたを出す、さばく　2（普通は受け身で）（建物など）の内側（中身）を破壊する、中をすっかり焼く」とありました。今回は2つ目の意味で用いられており、guttedはgutの形容詞形になります。LDOCEでguttedを引いてみると “seriously damaged or completely destroyed” とあり、ひどく壊れた、もしくは全壊したという意味であることがわかります。
記事では “gutted building” となっており、火災の被害が大きかったことが伺えます。
