Fidel Castro, Cuba’s revolutionary leader, dies aged 90

The thaw in relations was crowned when Obama visited the island earlier this year. Castro did not meet Obama and days later wrote a scathing column condemning the US president’s “honey-coated” words and reminding Cubans of the many Americanefforts to overthrow and weaken the Communist government.

今回取り上げる表現は,“honey-coated word”です。そのまま直訳すると,はちみつで塗られた言葉となりますが,どのような意味になるのでしょうか。“honey”から見ていくと,「はちみつ」がぱっと思い浮かべます。ほかには「(夫婦や恋人同士で用いる)ハニー」がありますが,しっくりきません。

ほかを調べていく中で,“honeyed word”を発見しました。形容詞の“honeyed”を確認してみると,『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)には,「〈言葉が〉甘い,お世辞の」と記載されていました。“honey-coated”は,“honeyed”と同じ意味であると考えられます。“honey-coated word”で「お世辞」や「ほめ言葉」などの意味になるのでしょうか。

また関連して,“sugar-coated”も同様の意味で用いられています。(Nao)
