One by one, the swing states fell his way: Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and then Wisconsin. Democrat Hillary Clinton had been clinging for hours to faint hopes as the election of the nation's 45th president roared to a frenzied conclusion.
Shortly after 2 a.m. ET, she called Trump to concede.
"I pledge to be president for all Americans," the billionaire real-estate mogul and reality TV star told an enthusiastic crowd of supporters in New York. "We are going to rebuild our inner cities... We will rebuild our infrastructure, which will become second to none."
He pledged to create jobs and take care of veterans.

今回取り上げる表現は、“razor-thin margin”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)で“razor-thin”を引いたところ、「(選挙などにおける勝利が)僅差の、紙一重の」と載っていました。“margin”の第２義には「(勝敗などでの)差、開き、格差」とあります。それぞれの表現の意味から、“razor-thin margin”で「紙一重の差」となります。
LDOCEで“razor-thin”を引いたところ、後ろに“victory”又は“margin”を伴って“in an election, a razor-thin victory is won by only a small number of votes”と定義されていました。
よく知られているように、“razor”は「かみそり」という意味です。それゆえに“razor-thin”で「〔かみそりの刃ように〕非常に薄い」という意味もあります。かみそりくらい薄いへだたりしかないというニュアンスで「紙一重の」という意味が生まれたのだと思います。
