Shelved Shinkansen line’s unknown legacy
At JR Tokyo Station, it’s about a 10-minute walk from the Shinkansen platforms and other conventional lines to the Keiyo Line platform. Hisashi Goto, public relations manager at the Chiba Branch Office of East Japan Railway Co., or JR East, revealed that the Keiyo Line portion of Tokyo Station was built for the nonexistent Narita Shinkansen — which, if it did exist, would connect Tokyo to Narita Airport. The plan to create the bullet train line fell through, but what remains is playing a role.
To the northwest of Narita Airport there is a viaduct running through the countryside. JR’s Narita Express and Keisei Electric Railway Co.’s Skyliner both travel over it.
