Sharing by young people propels success of ‘Your Name.’

Makoto Shinkai’s animated feature film “Your Name.” continues to dominate the Japanese box office 10 weeks after it opened, a success story that has dumbfounded industry experts and even its distributor.

The film raked in more than 15 billion yen ($142 million) in just 52 days after its premiere on Aug. 26, surpassing the box office total of “The Wind Rises,” anime maestro Hayao Miyazaki’s final feature film released three years ago.

The huge success of “Your Name.” has puzzled experts because Shinkai, an indie director, has nothing to do with legendary anime house Studio Ghibli Inc., nor does he have strong backing from broadcasters.

“Your Name.” is a body-swap story about a high school girl living in a rural town deep in the mountains and a high school boy living in central Tokyo. It focuses on the heartache of the two lovers who always miss chances to meet each other.

“The number of moviegoers remains unusually high, especially among young people in their teens and 20s,” a movie theater manager said.

“Your Name.” earned 900 million yen in its opening weekend.

Normally, films experience a decline in box office gross, but the figure for “Your Name.” rose to 1.1 billion yen in its second weekend, according to Kogyo Tsushinsha, a company that tracks box-office records. The age range of the audience also widened.

“There is no doubt that it had the potential to succeed, but it feels like winning a lottery to see it become such a hit,” said Tomoko Hazuma, a publicist at the film’s distributor, Toho Co.

LDOCEには“to earn a lot of money without trying very hard”と定義されています。

(Blue Sky)
