Prince Mikasa funeral takes place in Tokyo

TOKYO (Jiji Press) — A total of 582 people attended the funeral of Prince Mikasa, who passed away at the age of 100 on Oct. 27, in Tokyo on Friday to bid farewell to the youngest brother of Emperor Showa.

The Renso no Gi main funeral rite took place at the Toshimagaoka Imperial cemetery in Tokyo’s Bunkyo Ward. Attending the funeral were the prince’s 93-year-old widow, Princess Yuriko, other Imperial Family members, the heads of administration, legislature and judiciary, and people close to the late prince, who played active roles in a wide range of areas, including historical study, international friendship and sports.

In a eulogy read at a subsequent memorial ceremony, Motomasa Higashisono, executive director of the Japan-Turkey Society, who served as leader of the funeral service procedures, looked back at Prince Mikasa’s life, highlighting his achievements. Known as a researcher on ancient Oriental history, the late prince served as honorary president of the society.

“eulogy”を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「人・性格などについての称賛の言葉, 死者に対する頌徳文」という意味がありました。語源はギリシャ語「ほめ言葉」の意味があり、eugenicsで「優等生」やeuphoria「幸福感」といったような語彙からもわかるように“eu”には良いという意味があり、“logy”で言葉を表すことがわかりました。

LDOCEでは“a speech or piece of writing in which you praise someone or something very much, especially at a funeral”と定義されています。(lua)
