喫煙によって遺伝子の突然変異が起こりやすくなるようです。

Research shows extent of DNA mutation caused by smoking

Smoking a pack of cigarettes per day for a year causes an average of 150 cancer-causing DNA mutations in each lung cell, a joint study by scientists from four countries including Japan has found.

The researchers analyzed 5,243 cancer genome sequences in 17 types of cancer made more likely to occur by smoking and compared the number of genetic mutations in patients who smoked versus nonsmoking patients.

The study was featured in the Nov. 4 edition of the U.S. journal Science.

Mutations in the DNA of cells are likely to develop into cancer if they accumulate without being restored.

The findings clearly showed that smokers experienced more genetic mutations than nonsmokers suffering from lung, larynx, oral, bladder, liver and kidney cancers.

今回取り上げるのはmutationです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、「（生物）突然変異（体）」という意味が見つかりました。LDOCEでは “a change in the genetic structure of an animal or plant that makes it different from others of the same kind” と定義されており、動物や植物の遺伝子構造の変化を意味します。
動詞形のmutateで語源を調べますと諸説あるようですが、その中の1つとしてラテン語からきており、mūtōは変わるという意味を持つことがわかりました。
