27日、昭和天皇の弟である三笠宮崇仁親王殿下が100歳で薨去されました。

UPDATE: Prince Mikasa, uncle of Akihito, dies at 100 years old

Prince Mikasa, the youngest brother of Emperor Hirohito, posthumously known as Emperor Showa, and an uncle of Emperor Akihito, died of heart failure in Tokyo on Oct. 27.

Mikasa, a staff member of Japan’s military headquarters during World War II and postwar researcher in Oriental history, was 100.

His wife of 75 years, Yuriko, 93, was by his side when he died at St. Luke’s International Hospital in Chuo Ward.

The prince was admitted to the hospital on May 16 for acute pneumonia. His heart functions weakened in the middle of June, and he faced several critical situations, including accumulation of water in his lungs, according to sources.

However, Mikasa’s health conditions, including his blood pressure, had been stable in recent days, Hirokazu Nagawa, the Imperial Household Agency’s chief doctor in charge of the imperial family, said. Mikasa was engaged in rehabilitation activities on his bed, including stretching his arms and legs.

But his heartbeat gradually slowed from around 7:40 a.m. on Oct. 27, and his heart stopped functioning around 8 a.m. He was pronounced dead at 8:34 a.m.

“It can be said that his condition changed suddenly,” Nagawa said in a news conference.

Mikasa was fifth in line to the imperial throne, following Crown Prince Naruhito, Prince Fumihito, Prince Hisahito and Prince Hitachi.

確認のためにMacmillan Dictionaryを引いたところ、“given to someone after their death, or happening after their death”と定義されていました。

ちなみに、“posthumous”の第2義には「〈作品などが〉著者の死後に出版された」という意味があり、こちらの意味でもよく用いられるようです(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。“a posthumous work”で「遺作」と表現することができます。(Blue Sky)
