今回取り上げる表現は"probationary period"というフレーズです。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版）には「執行猶予、見習い期間、実習期間、仮採用期間」と載っており、Word Reference comにはprobationそのものは "the act of testing.the testing or trial of a person's conduct, character, qualifications, or the like.the state or period of such testing or trial." と定義され、これにtimeがつくわけですので、新入社員が着任したあとの「見習い、試用期間」を指すと思います。
日本では試用期間の法的規制はなく、各社に委ねられていると先生からお聞きしました。ブラック企業のことが話題にのぼる昨今ですので、試用期間の給与、万が一退職したときの手当など気になります。(Mt.Fuji)
