PHILADELPHIA — Having missed out on the Rio Olympics, teenager Miu Hirano showed she will firmly be in the mix for a place at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

The 16-year-old Hirano became the youngest winner in the history of the ITTF Women’s World Cup, defeating Taiwan’s Cheng I-ching 4-0 in the final on Sunday in Philadelphia.

The fifth-seeded Hirano, ranked 17th in the world, swept past the No. 2 seed and world No. 8 Cheng 11-9, 11-5 11-4, 11-8, which also made her the first non-Chinese player to win the tournament, according to the ITTF, table tennis’ world governing body.
