Price of veggies skyrockets due to cloudy skies ruining harvests

Vegetables are costing up to twice as much as usual in Tokyo after harvests nationwide were wrecked by a lack of sunlight in September.

Some regions of Japan experienced the shortest number of sunlight hours from Sept. 11 to 20 since records began being kept in 1961, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

“The temperatures were relatively high, but the hours of sunlight were short,” said a JMA forecaster.

The average number of hours of sunlight in September was 74 percent of that in conventional years in eastern Japan and 69 percent in western Japan.

In particular, it was 26 percent on the Pacific coast in eastern Japan, and 44 percent on the Sea of Japan coast in western Japan during the period from Sept. 11 to 20.

Rainfall totals in eastern Japan were 40 percent above average in September and jumped a massive 90 percent in western Japan, both of which were the third highest on record for the month.

今回取り上げるのは見出しにあるskyrocketです。rocketという語が含まれていることで値段が上がっていくイメージがわきます。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）には自動詞で「（略式）（物価などが）急に上がる、急騰する」という意味が載っておりました。ちなみに反意語はplummetになります。Merriam-Websterには “to increase quickly to a very high level or amount” と定義されており、quicklyとvery high level or amountという部分がポイントになるかと思います。

この表現は過去にも取り上げられております。その時のものを見てみますと、名詞では「打ち上げ花火」という意味になることがわかりました。（aqua）
