Inada visits GSDF camp in South Sudan

Defense Minister Tomomi Inada visited Ground Self-Defense Force troops’ camp in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, on Saturday and inspected their activities under the U.N. peacekeeping mission in the African nation.

Inada told the GSDF members that they are making contributions to peace and stability in South Sudan and their activities are of great significance, according to the Defense Ministry.

Although the government says the situation in the young African nation remains stable, chances cannot be ruled out that the new duties will send GSDF personnel there into life-threatening situations, pundits said, pointing out that a major clash took place between government troops and rebels in July.

Inada told reporters that she will consider whether to assign the new duties with all other cabinet members.
