銀座に新しくできた商業施設「GINZA PLACE(銀座プレイス)」が注目を集めています。

Tokyo’s top new people-watching spot, Ginza Place opens its doors

Japan’s smartest shopping district’s latest addition, Ginza Place, is keeping up the area’s posh reputation with its gleaming white exterior and plethora of top brands taking up retail space inside.

The 56-meter high building at Ginza Yon-chome in Tokyo opened its doors on Sept. 24, inviting shoppers in to peruse its 13 stories, including two underground.

Ginza Place’s third-floor cafe boasts a panoramic view of the busy Ginza Yon-chome crossing.

The fourth and fifth floors offer a wide variety of digital cameras and audio devices in Sony Corp.’s showrooms, and Nissan Motor Co. has also set up its own showroom in the complex.

“I hope the companies doing business in Ginza will use this new building to showcase their brands to the world,” said Toshiyuki Ikoma, president and representative director at Sapporo Real Estate Co.

Ginza Place was built by Sapporo Real Estate and other entities to replace the site’s former Sapporo Ginza Building, which was closed due to its aging structure.

今回取り上げる表現は“posh”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第3版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「〈ホテル・レストランなどが〉豪華な、しゃれた」とありました。

LDOCEでは、“a posh restaurant, hotel, car etc is expensive and looks as if it is used or owned by rich people”とありました。

ちなみに、“posh”には「上流階級のアクセントで」という意味の副詞的用法があり、LDOCEでは“talk posh”で“to talk in an upper class way”という意味になると載っていました。また、名詞形である“posho”には「上流階級の人」という意味があり、こちらは非難の意を込めた表現だそうです。(Blue Sky)
