Mitsubishi MRJ deliveries likely to be set back for a fifth time
Commercial deliveries of the nation’s first domestically produced passenger jet may be delayed yet again due to technical problems, dealing a blow to Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. as it struggles to win more orders for the plane.
Mitsubishi Aircraft has contacted a carrier that has already placed orders for its Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ), and other parties about the likely delay in deliveries scheduled for mid-2018, it was learned Oct. 1.
It would be the fifth time for the company to postpone delivery.
The company cited technical problems for the likely delay, sources said.
Mitsubishi Aircraft initially planned to deliver the jet in 2013, but has had to postpone those plans four times already, citing changes in the aircraft's design and specifications of components.
Mitsubishi Aircraft announced late last year that deliveries will begin in the middle of 2018.
When contacted by The Asahi Shimbun, it declined to comment on the duration or cause of the delay.
The glitch came after a prototype of the MRJ made its first transoceanic journey to the United States in late September after two failed attempts. The aircraft is expected to undergo full-fledged flight tests at the company's base there.
The aircraft’s arrival in Washington state came one month behind schedule.
The previous attempts in late August failed due to air conditioning problems.
