‘Your Name.’ of Makoto Shinkai tops 10 billion yen in 28 days
The teenage body-swap romance anime “Your Name.” raked in more than 10 billion yen ($99.56 million) at the Japanese box office by Sept. 22, just 28 days after it opened on Aug. 26, according to Toho Co.
Directed by Makoto Shinkai, the film sold 7.74 million tickets, the film company added.
According to box-office tracking company Kogyo Tsushinsha, “Your Name.” is the first Japanese anime film to cross the 10 billion yen threshold, except for movies made by Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki.
It is also the ninth-highest grossing Japanese film of all time, and the most successful movie released in Japan this year.
“Your Name.” is the story of a high school girl named Mitsuha, who lives in a rural town deep in the mountains and whose mind is switched with that of a high school boy named Taki, who lives in central Tokyo. It portrays the heartache of the two lovers always missing meeting each other and their destiny affected by the arrival of a comet.
According to Kogyo Tsushinsha, five of Miyazaki’s films took in more than 10 billion yen: “Spirited Away,” “Howl's Moving Castle,” “Princess Mononoke,” “Ponyo” and “The Wind Rises.” “Spirited Away” topped 30 billion yen.
