Skytree tour offers backstage glimpse
The Tokyo Skytree in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, began guided tours last month to showcase the engineering wonders of the world’s highest broadcasting tower.
The aim of the guided tour is to help visitors deepen their understanding of its inner structure and the technology used to sustain the monumental architecture. Participants can actually touch the steel frames supporting the tower and get an intimate look at structures not usually accessible to visitors.
In addition to the latest technology, a variety of traditional techniques were employed for the 634-meter Skytree, such as a shinbashira (center column), which is the type of column used at the center of traditional five-story pagodas in Japan, as well as curves called mukuri (convex curves) and sori (concave curves), which are also used in temples.
On the guided tour, participants are allowed to enter areas that are usually only seen through glass by visitors on the first floor, where the guide gives a detailed explanation about the structure. Wearing a helmet, participants can put their hands on steel frames up to more than two meters in diameter, which are part of the kanae three-legged structure that supports the tower. Looking up from below, visitors can see the sori and mukuri curves.

今回取り上げるのはshowcaseです。日本語でも商品を並べる棚をショーケースと言いますが、動詞ではどのような意味があるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べますと、他動詞で「（才能など）を引き立てて見せる、披露する」と載っておりました。Cambridge Free English Dictionary には “to show the best qualities or parts of something” とあり、bestという部分から見せるものの状態にこだわっていることが伺えます。今回は「披露する」の意味で用いられていると考えられます。
