Death count rises to 2 in poisoned drip hospital killings
YOKOHAMA--A second elderly inpatient was found to have been killed by poison at a Yokohama hospital after an antiseptic solution was added to his intravenous drip bag, police said.
Sozo Nishikawa was the same age, 88, as the other confirmed victim, Nobuo Yamaki. Both men shared a room at Oguchi Hospital and were killed in an identical manner.
A strong sterilization agent used in hospital disinfectants was found in both men's bodies, police said Sept. 26.
Police suspect that someone put the antiseptic solution into intravenous drip liquid hooked up to both men.
Two other elderly people on the fourth floor who have also died since Sept. 18 died of disease and were not poisoned, judicial autopsies have confirmed. One was a man in his 80s who died on Sept. 18 while the other was a woman in her 90s, who died on Sept. 20.
Nishikawa, of Yokohama’s Aoba Ward, was admitted into the hospital in the city’s Kanagawa Ward on Sept. 13, according to police. He was bedridden but no abnormal conditions were seen until Sept. 17. After being given the intravenous drip Sept. 18, his physical condition gradually deteriorated and later on the day a nurse found him dead.
His death was confirmed at 7 p.m., and initially it was diagnosed that he died of a disease, not from poisoning.
Yamaki, from Yokohama’s Kohoku Ward, died of poisoning two days later.
The antiseptic solution believed to have been used in the killings was placed in various parts of the hospital, including on the fourth floor.
