奈良県明日香村のキトラ古墳の壁画を保存、公開する「キトラ古墳壁画体験館 四神の館」が今月24日から正式オープンします。

Kitora Tomb's ancient murals, star chart finally see light of day

ASUKA, Nara Prefecture—A special storage facility showcasing exquisite ancient animal murals that have been painstakingly restored, along with what is thought to be the world's oldest depiction of the heavens, will open here Sept. 24.

For a limited period, visitors will have an opportunity to view the images and the ceiling star chart at close range, something that has been much-anticipated for many years.

今回取り上げるのは、“see the light of day”という表現です。この表現をLDOCEで調べてみると、“if an object sees the light of day, it is taken from the place where it has been hidden, and becomes publicly known”と定義されていました。また『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)には、「〈計画・文書などが〉日の目を見る、公表される」といった意味が記載されていました。

“see the light of day”の表記から「今まで埋もれていたものが、掘り起こされて日の光を浴びる」イメージがわき、そこから上記の意味になったのではないかと考えました。(ninetails)
