Lotte group chairman questioned in scandal

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, which has been investigating an off-the-book funds scandal involving South Korea’s Lotte group, questioned the group’s Chairman, Akio Shigemitsu, on Tuesday on suspicion of breach of trust and embezzlement.

Akio Shigemitsu, 61, whose Korean name is Shin Dong Bin, is the second son of the Lotte group’s 93-year-old founder, Takeo Shigemitsu, or Shin Kyuk Ho. Akio Shigemitsu is also vice chairman of Japan’s Lotte Holdings Co.

According to local media reports, the younger Shigemitsu is suspected of breach of trust as he allegedly made affiliated companies cover massive losses the core group company suffered through corporate mergers and acquisitions. He was also allegedly involved in amassing off-the-book funds at Lotte Engineering & Construction.

Furthermore, he is suspected of having committed embezzlement by receiving massive salaries as a board director of a group company in Japan without actually doing any work in the post.

Among members of the Lotte group founding family, Takeo Shigemitsu’s eldest daughter, 73, was arrested and indicted in July on charges of breach of trust and embezzlement.

The father himself and his 62-year-old eldest son, Hiroyuki Shigemitsu, or Shin Dong Joo, have been questioned since earlier this month on suspicion of tax evasion and embezzlement.

今回取り上げるのはembezzlementです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）には不可算名詞で「使い込み、横領」と載っておりました。Cambridge Free English Dictionaryには “to secretly and illegally take money that is in your care or that belongs to an organization or business you work for” と説明されており、ある組織や会社からの横領を表すようです。そしてsecretlyという部分から、気づかれないようにこっそりとというイメージがわきました。
