Japanese journalist, antiwar activist Takeji Muno dies at 101

Centenarian journalist and antiwar activist Takeji Muno died Sunday at his home in the city of Saitama, just northwest of Tokyo, due to senility, his family said. He was 101.

He was known as the publisher of a weekly local newspaper named "Taimatsu" (Torch), and wrote antiwar articles including those revealing his regret that he had been unable to report the truth during World War II and instead had participated in activities to boost morale by writing false reports of victories.

Hailing from Akita Prefecture in northern Japan, he graduated from the predecessor of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies majoring in Spanish. He began working as a reporter during the Pacific War and joined the Asahi Shimbun newspaper in 1940.

今回は “the predecessor of”を取り上げます。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）によると、 “predecessor”は「前任者，以前使われていたもの」などと定義されております。反対語は “successor”で、「後任者，継承者」などの意味があります。「後を引き継ぐ」の “success”が名詞になったものです。

またOxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)で調べたところ、 “a person who held a job or office before the current holder”と “ a thing that has been followed or replaced by another”の二つの定義が載っておりました。 “pre”が「前」、　“deces”が「引退した」、 “or”が「人」を表しています。語源はラテン語だそうです。

文中では “he graduated from the predecessor of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies”と書かれております。この “the predecessor of”は「前身」として意味が撮れるかと思います。つまり東京外語大学の前身校である、旧制東京外国語学校を出られた（最近，卒業式にのぞまれました）ということが分かります。

ちなみに組織や団体などの前身は、 “forerunner”や“precursor”などの言葉でも表すことができます。同英和辞典で調べたところ、 “forerunner”は「先駆け，前兆」などと定義されており、 “precursor”も「先駆者，前兆，前任者」などと定義されておりました。（Gomez）
