Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)で調べたところ、 “imitate or emulate someone in a particular way”と載っておりました。
また『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）によると、「〈人〉を手本にする，まねる」とのことでした。ここのleafは「頁」のことで，ofは「離脱」の意味です。 “take a leaf from one’s book”とも使うようです。
もう少し詳しく知りたかったのでインターネットで検索してみたところ、 “The original meaning of this idiom was therefore to ‘plagiarise’.”と記載されているサイトを見つけました。
文中の“plagiarise”（米綴り：plagiarize）はもちろん，「剽窃する」ですが，ここでは「借用する」といった感じの意味合いです。（Gomez）
