Hotel for Muslim travelers opens near Mt. Fuji
A hotel for Muslim travelers has opened near the Kawaguchiko lake, a tourist spot at the foot of Mt. Fuji.
“Syariah Hotel Fujisan,” which opened late last month in the Yamanashi Prefecture town of Fujikawaguchiko, has a prayer room and offers halal food complying with Islamic religious law.
At the hotel, a renovated house that was previously empty, Japanese dishes using beef and unfermented seasonings will be served in consideration of bans on the consumption of alcohol and pork.
Prayer mats are available at the hotel, which contains eight rooms with arrows pointing to Mecca.
As of Wednesday, no reservations had been made at the hotel.
Shigeru Yamashita, president of the hotel operator, said that he did not expect customers in the first days after the opening. “I run the hotel while looking ahead to the future in five to 10 years,” he said.
Yamashita, 72, became interested in halal food after sponsoring an event several years ago organized by a group that certifies such diets.
He decided to target Muslim tourists due to the increasing number of visitors to Fujikawaguchiko from Indonesia and Malaysia, both of which have large populations of Muslims, on the back of the countries’ economic growth.

今回取り上げるのは “halal food” です。halalをLDOCEで調べてみますと、 “halal meat is meat from an animal that has been killed in a way that is approved by Muslim law” という意味が載っておりました。「イスラム教の法律で正式に認められている方法で殺された」という部分が重要になると思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べてみましたが載っておりませんでした。電子辞書に内蔵されている『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版 大修館書店）で調べてみますと、「イスラムのおきてで殺すことを許された動物の肉」という意味が見つかりました。辞書の意味では肉について触れられていますが、記事ではアルコール類の禁止についても触れられているので、“halal food” は肉だけではなく、イスラム教の法律に則った料理全般を表すのではないかと思われました。
この表現は過去に先生が取り上げていらっしゃいました。(aqua)
