Rio 2016 / Long-standing rivalry helps swimmers grow

Two swimmers, both born in 1994, battled each other for an Olympic gold medal. It was a historic day for Japanese swimming.

Kosuke Hagino has often referred to “a one-on-one fight against Daiya [Seto]” recently. “One-on-one” is a very common expression, but it was significant because it meant Hagino had become to able to squarely regard Seto as his rival.
However, Hagino was beaten by Seto at a number of international competitions, including the 2013 world championships. Hagino admitted that he felt like he had a hard time competing against the only Japanese swimmer in his generation who was his equal. That was one reason he lost.

Hagino touted as a swimming prodigy at the competition where he and Seto are believed to have first faced off against each other, when they were third-grade primary school students. At that time, Hagino defeated Seto in the 200-meter individual medley with a huge lead of more than 15 meters.

LDOCEでは“to praise something or someone in order to persuade people that they are important or worth a lot”とあります。
(lua)
