今回取り上げるのは、“jump on the bandwagon”という表現です。“bandwagon”と聞くと「(パレードの先頭の)楽隊車」を思い浮かべますが、この表現はどのような意味になるのでしょうか。
まずLDOCEで調べてみると、“to start doing or saying something that a lot of people are already doing or saying - used to show disapproval”と定義されていました。また『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)には、「｟略式｠大勢の尻馬に乗る、積極的に時流に乗る」といった意味が記載されていました。したがって、この記事では「あらゆる年齢層の日本人が、ポケモンGOブームに乗ることが予想される」などと表せます。(ninetails)
